This post is for anyone who loves Italian cinema. Film is a wonderful way to travel, travel back in time and discover familiar places from a new perspective.

Watching movies in Italian is also a great way to learn Italian. That's why some of the videos below are available without voiceover, but if you have the opportunity I recommend seeing them.

Roman Holiday, 1953, William Wyler

The story of Princess Anne. While traveling in Europe she decides to leave her golden cage and spend a day in Rome. Starring Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck. This is one of the most iconic productions with Rome in the background. The film won 3 Oscars in the category - including Best Leading Actress and Best Costume Design, and a Golden Globe in 1954. (Again, Audrey Hepburn in the role of best actress).

La grande bellezza, 2013, Paolo Sorrentino

I love movies that are directed by Italians. La Grande Belezza is a flashback story. An aging journalist returns to his youth with memories. This is not a simple film, but rather a melancholy story about the search for the meaning of life and the Italian elite of the cultural world. Rome serves as a magnificent setting here. There are colors, play of lights and beautiful music.

La Dolce Vita, 1960, Federico Fellini

The story of journalist Marcello Rubini, who lives and works in Rome. Like La Grande Bellezza, it's a multi-layered film about the search for the meaning of life. A black-and-white production for connoisseurs of cinema - the film is 3 hours long. It is also worthwhile because of the director. Federico Fellini is an icon and legend of Italian cinema. The film won an Academy Award for Best Costume Design in 1962.

Ladri di biciclette, 1948, Vittorio De Sica

Bicycle Thieves is a film that takes us to post-war Rome and is an example of Italian neorealism. It is the oldest production on my list that shows Italy from a completely different perspective. The film, despite its simple plot, holds the viewer in suspense and moves him. Black and white cinema and a script written on the basis of a novel by Luigi Bartolini. Interestingly - during the filming of the movie, amateurs were relied on to replace professional actors.

Gli anni più belli, 2020, Gabriele Muccino

Italian drama movie about the story of friends who enter adulthood together. This is a warm story about the fate of 3 friends, who are soon joined by Gemma - a girl who messes up the lives of the characters. And although always together, the paths of the four constantly cross over the years. From the beginning, the film stirs emotions and is very dynamic. The plot of the film begins in 1982 in Rome. To be seen, among others, on Italian Netflix - unfortunately, only in the version with Italian subtitles.

C'è ancora domani, 2023, Paola Cortellesi

The film, which resonated with the public and became very popular. Currently to be seen on Italian Netlix (in Poland it can be rented on streaming and cinema platforms). Although the film is set in post-war Rome, the story is told in a way that moves modern viewers. The film tells the story of the struggle against the Italian patriarchy and women's rebellion against the sad, perspective-less everyday life in which they had to live.

Eat, Pray, Love, 2010, Ryan Murphy

Elizabeth Gilbert (played by Julia Roberts) is an unhappy and disillusioned woman who embarks on the journey of a lifetime - first to Italy, then India and Indonesia. The film was shot in Rome and Naples and contributed to the immense popularity of Italy and Indonesia. The film, which resonated with the public and became very popular. I recommend the film especially because of the wonderful and charismatic Julie Roberts.

Mia, 2023, Ivano De Matteo

A story of crush and love that leads to tragedy. This is not a story about the rich Italian elite, but a story about the fate of a simple family living in Rome. The film was not widely distributed in Poland, but it was memorable for me. Shot in 2023, it shows life in the eternal city from the perspective of teenage girls and ordinary working people.
